Janina Ellis

Janina’s paintings feature crowds of energetic people in dynamic public places. At first glance, the paintings present themselves as monochromatic, black-and-white images. They bring to mind decades of archived newspaper photographs and front page cover photos of European cities and thriving urban cityscapes. However, at second glance, the viewer realizes that they are chalk full of ‘secret’ colors—warm greys, deep browns, taupe glazes, and rich blue highlights.
